Parents reunited with students trapped by floods in Tomball

TOMBALL, TX (KTRK) -- More than a day after heading to school, 55 students have been reunited with their families after becoming trapped at an elementary school due to flooding.

Strong storms on Friday brought high waters to Highway 249 and Zion Road in Tomball, trapping students inside Decker Prairie Elementary School overnight.

High waters are keeping parents from students who have been stuck inside Tomball schools for nearly a day.

Tomball ISD officials say the students were released to their parents at noon. Dr. Staci Stanfield, spokeswoman for the district, expressed gratitude for the teachers and staff who stayed overnight to keep the children safe.

Parents told abc13 reporter Marla Carter that the students seemed to be doing alright based on phone calls, while they anxiously await their release.

One possible family member as seen apparently trying to reach the school using a canoe earlier this morning as floodwaters continued to prevent their release.

Emergency workers are now taking to the water in a search for flood victims in Tomball

Stanfield says 34 other students at Tomball High School and Rosehill Elementary School had also been stuck at school, but managed to make it out safely well before the release of the Decker Prairie students.

Students spending the night at schools during severe weather, Pooja Lodhia reports.

District officials say the good news was the water never threatened the campuses.

Students told their parents they watched movies to pass the time.
