One person fatally shot near elementary school in SW Houston

HOUSTON -- Homicide detectives are investigating a fatal shooting near an elementary school in southwest Houston.

The shooting was reported in the 5900 block of Westward, which puts it right outside of Benavidez Elementary School.

Details about the shooting are still sketchy, but officials say one male is dead and a 16-year-old was shot in the leg.

Hundreds of residents from a nearby apartment complex have gathered around the scene, and investigators are interviewing those who witnessed the shooting.
