Accused child molester appears in court
Armando Gonzalez, 50, is accused of sexually assaulting his 7 year old niece in 2004

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston police have finally made an arrest in an aggravated sexual assault case involving a child from more than a decade ago.

Armando Gonzalez, 50, is accused of sexually assaulting his seven-year-old niece in 2004. Prosecutors say the young victim made an outcry to her mother alleging he asked her to touch his genitals. Gonzalez was arrested back then but, according to prosecutors, posted bond and fled to Mexico where he has been living since.

Defense attorneys argue Gonzalez didn't flee the country but was visiting Mexico and has been living in Houston ever since.

Gonzalez was recently arrested when Houston police pulled over his brother during a traffic stop. Gonzalez was sitting in the passenger seat and when officers asked for his identification, prosecutors say he provided a fake ID, claiming he was someone else. Further investigation revealed his true identity and police arrested him.

A judge refused to grant Gonzalez bond. He will remain in custody with an ICE detainer, since he is in the country illegally.
