HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It was back on September 4, 2013 when dozens of law enforcement officials swarmed the school after reports of a student being stabbed. That student, Joshua Broussard, later died. Students and staff at the school are moving on one year later.

The district says they tried to keep the day business-as-usual, but students could wear a green ribbon as a silent expression of remembrance the students are a year older now since that day of chaos in their high school.

"We've come to terms with it," high school senior Cameron Stokes said.

"A pretty normal day. Things went on like they normally do," high school senior Justin Weston said.

On September 4 of last year, Broussard was stabbed to death during a fight in the cafeteria and three other students were injured. Thursday along with ribbons, students could write messages on blank note cards. Work on a mural is also underway called "Spring Tree of Life."

"About Spring High School and the history and the event that happened last year and how we're going to move forward and be more positive and try to make our school and community more positive," Stokes said.

Spring ISD and Spring High School both had leadership changes this past summer with a new superintendent and principal.

Superintendent Dr. Rodney E. Watson says they are focused on three priorities: student achievement, safety and security and communications

And school leaders say they have been working with students to instill pride and a sense of ownership in their school as a way to increase safety and security...

"I feel a lot safer than I used to. They are more strict and crack down," Weston said.

It's important for this senior to have a very normal senior year.

"I'm not worried about anyone getting stabbed again. That's good," Weston said.

The school is preparing for a big homecoming event on September 20. It will be the first homecoming parade the school has held in a decade.
