Two people were rescued on the San Jacinto River when their car was swept away by flood waters

CLEVELAND, TX (KTRK) -- Two people had to be rescued when their vehicle was swept into the San Jacinto River last night near Cleveland on US 59.

Authorities say victims were fishing when the water came up as they were about to leave.

Cleveland Police Department Officer Scott Felts said, "So firefighters hiked the trek down the river on the bank, reached the vehicle. Firefighters were able to offer a lifeline with a life vest. Pull the occupants who were in the vehicle still to safety. The officers were OK. The two occupants of the vehicle appear to be okay as well. So a disaster was averted."
