Harris County Clerk expects over 500,000 votes this election, a rare occurrence for midterm primary

As polls closed at 7 p.m., Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth shared details on how voting went on Election Day.

Hudspeth started by saying that while polls closed at 7 p.m., several voting centers still have voters in line who are able to cast their ballots in-person.

The county clerk said the office is currently releasing the early voting results, adding that about 340,000 votes were cast both in-person and mail-in during the early voting window.

Hudspeth said she expects more than half a million votes, including early voting and votes on Election Day, in Harris County this primary election, adding that this is a rare occurrence for a midterm primary election year compared to a presidential election year.

As of 7:12 p.m., over 201,000 voters cast their ballots in person on Election Day, according to Hudspeth. Of that 201,000, over 130,000 were voting in the Democratic primary, and over 70,000 voted in the Republican primary. Hudspeth emphasized that there are still voters in line, so the official number of voters is still fluid.

"Overall, it's been a good election day in Harris County," Hudspeth said.
