July 4th traffic, events, and more: What to know as nation celebrates its 250th birthday

As the nation celebrates America's 250th anniversary, visitors to the Houston Zoo can get an up-close look at one of the country's most iconic symbols, the bald eagle.

There are two female bald eagles at the Houston Zoo: Sally and Mae. They are named after the trailblazing astronauts Sally Ride and Mae Jemison.

According to the Zoo's birdkeeper, Steve Howard, Sally was found on the side of a road, probably after being hit by a car. Her injuries meant she could no longer fly, so she could not be released. Mae was found during Winter Storm Uri in 2021, after she had likely flown into a building. Like Sally, her injuries meant she could never go back to the wild.

As America celebrates 250 years, we're taking a closer look at the bird that became a national symbol.

As the United States prepares to mark its 250th anniversary, the Stars and Stripes are flying high across the country.

At Kronbergs Flags and Flagpoles in Houston, workers continue the tradition of hand-sewing U.S. flags, carefully stitching together the 50 stars and 13 stripes on the Red, White, Blue flag that has become a symbol of the country's history and identity.

More than 72 million people are expected to travel over the week of the Fourth of July, setting a new record, according to AAA.

Here's what you need to know:

Air travel

According to AAA, top domestic destinations for the Fourth of July are Seattle; Orlando, Florida; Anchorage, Alaska; Miami; and New York City.

American Airlines said it is expecting to break records, with 8.1 million customers flying on more than 80,000 flights -- a nearly 10% increase from last year. American considers holiday travel to be between Thursday, June 25, and Monday, July 6.

United Airlines said it's preparing for about 6 million passengers over the Fourth of July holiday, which it considers from Friday, June 26 to Monday, July 6. The airline said it's seeing an increase in bookings for Philadelphia and Boston.

Alaska Airlines said it has 6,283 flights scheduled from Friday, July 3 to Monday, July 6 -- a 2.5% increase from last year. The airline said its busiest days will be July 3 and July 6.

Road travel

AAA projects 61.4 million people will travel by car over the Fourth of July holiday, which it considers Saturday, June 27, through Sunday, July 5.

If you're hitting the road on Saturday, June 27, the worst traffic is expected from noon to 5 p.m., according to transportation analytics company INRIX. Drivers are advised to head out the door before 10 a.m.

Those traveling home on Sunday, July 5, will find the roads emptiest before 11 a.m., with the worst traffic from noon to 6 p.m., INRIX said.

Houston is celebrating America's 250th birthday at Freedom Over Texas this Fourth of July.

Keith Urban, Los Lonely Boys, and Collective Soul will take the stage at Eleanor Tinsley Park, followed by a fireworks finale. Gates will open at 3 p.m., and the event is expected to last until 10 p.m. Live entertainment will start around 4 p.m.

ABC13 is the exclusive television partner of Freedom Over Texas and will broadcast the event live. Coverage begins at 7 p.m.

If you're planning to attend, here are some things you should know.

What you're encouraged to bring:

• Sunscreen and mosquito spray

• Sunglasses and a hat

• A towel, blanket, or lawn chair for comfortable viewing

• Cash, credit, or debit card to enjoy the wide variety of food and beverages offered

• Portable chargers

• Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and comfortable shoes

Items not allowed:

• Food or beverages (infant & special health needs allowed)

• Coolers

• Alcohol

• Pets (seeing eye/assistance dogs allowed)

• Glass containers

• Shading devces larger than 4 feet in diameter

• Skates, rollerblades or skateboard, bikes

• All weapons (appropriate state penal codes will be placed at all entrances)

• Fireworks

• Laser pointers

• Drones

• Due to performers' contracts, no professional recording devices (audio, video, camera, and drones) are allowed during live performances. Any person found in using such equipment will be asked to leave the venue. All media discs will be confiscated.
