FIFA Fan Festival Houston: What you need to know

FIFA described its fan experience as the ultimate destination for World Cup fans in Houston, and ABC13 got a first look at some of the featured experiences before it opened to the public.

The festival is located just east of downtown Houston, next to Shell Energy Stadium. It will be open every day of the World Cup and is a first-come, first-served venue where fans can watch all the matches for free.

FIFA said there are several experiences fans can partake in at the festival, and since it's taking place in the Houston heat, organizers say there will be misting zones, water stations, and shaded areas.

Several fans reporting smooth experience in World Cup match at Houston Stadium amid traffic and rain

Fans came into Houston Stadium expecting heavy traffic and rain.

Several fans told ABC13 everything went smoothly, and they left with a great experience. They not only got to see one of the best in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo, but they also witnessed history.

According to FIFA, Wednesday's match marked the Democratic Republic of Congo's first World Cup goal.

Many of the fans say they're from out of town and arrived as early as Tuesday to avoid traffic congestion. They also booked nearby hotels so they could walk or use ride-share services to get to the stadium.

The rain was a concern on Wednesday morning during a major downpour. Luckily, it cleared about an hour before kickoff.

Fans say, rain or shine, they were determined to be here.

"It's very important. We need to come and encourage our players, our team, our countries. We need to lift up our flag," Nenette Tshish, visiting from Dallas, said.

Ronaldo, Portugal ends in draw vs. DR Congo in World Cup match at Houston Stadium

DR Congo produced another stunning result at the 2026 World Cup as the African side won their first-ever point in the tournament by holding one of the pre-tournament favorites, Portugal, to a 1-1 draw in Houston on Wednesday.

Yoane Wissa struck Congo's first goal at a World Cup deep into first-half stoppage time to cancel out an early opening goal from Portugal's João Neves in the sixth minute.

Cristiano Ronaldo joined Lionel Messi as the only men to play in six World Cups and, aged 41 years and 132 days, he became the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match. But the forward cut a frustrated figure in attack.

Congo are appearing in just their second World Cup and first since 1974, when they competed as Zaire and lost all three games without scoring.

ABC13 had a crew outside Houston Stadium where hundreds of fans walked out after a game between DR Congo and Portugal.
