HPD officer charged with deadly conduct over mass shooting threat

HOUSTON -- A Houston police officer remains in jail accused of displaying two guns and threatening to turn his wife's workplace into a "meat market."

Pedro Gonzalez, 45, is charged with deadly conduct and domestic assault. He was already off the job after being charged with driving while intoxicated in July.

It was last week at an office building on the Katy Freeway near Kirkwood that HPD says Gonzalez threatened his wife as well as her co-workers.

According to court documents, he confronted his wife as she pulled into the parking lot, saying he was going to kill her and turn the place into a "meat market." He then lifted his shirt to reveal his tactical vest, two handguns and several semi-automatic magazines.

Following the threat, HPD's Acting Police Chief Martha Montalvo issued an officer safety alert, Eyewitness News has learned.

The recent incident comes after an assault that happened at the couple's apartment near Memorial Park in March, according to court documents. Gonzalez's wife told an investigator Gonzalez threw her up against a desk, put a gun in her mouth and threatened to kill her if she left him.

Gonzalez is assigned to the Vehicular Crimes Division and has been with the department for 15 years. He was relieved of duty with pay in July pending an Internal Affairs Division (IAD) investigation after his DWI arrest.

HPD spokesman John Cannon says IAD is now investigating all three charges. Gonzalez is expected in court on Wednesday.
