MAHWAH, NJ -- A FedEx tractor trailer flipped and overturned Monday morning on Interstate 287 in Mahwah, New Jersey, spilling dozens of packages on the company's busiest day for deliveries.
One of two tandem trailers overturned at about 3:45 a.m., spilling boxes onto the highway. The driver suffered minor injuries.
Authorities say the driver lost control and the rig flipped on the ramp from northbound routes 287 and 17 to southbound 287 and 17.
Exit 66 on Interstate 287 was closed for over six hours and traffic was detoured into New York State.
Police say the highway reopened at 10:05 a.m.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. The driver said he was avoiding a tire in the roadway when the accident occured.
FedEx said it expected Monday to be the busiest day in its history. It is the last day to send packages by parcel post and expect to have them delivered by Christmas Eve.
FedEx officials say company crews got to the scene shortly after the crash and quickly reloaded packages to help reduce possible delivery delays.
