Caitlin Murphy reports on some very young aspiring DJs in East Village

NEW YORK -- Along with teaching babies from 3 to 36 months how to be the coolest kid on the playground, Natalie Weiss's classes use professional DJ equipment and original music to build babies motor and language skills.

"Babies' minds are capable of a lot, so I decided to create a program that would really challenge them as well as give them exposure to electronic dance music," said Weiss.

A professional DJ and performance artist herself, Weiss introduces the babies, and often parents, to house, club and even jungle music. She references the music's intense "four on the floor" beats as something the young DJ's understand and enjoy.

"The babies start doing something I like to call the penguin right to the beat of the music," said Weiss.

Along with dancing and singing, there are Baby DJ scratch lessons. And those scratch lessons aren't just for fun. According to Weiss, the activity also helps babies develop dexterity like their pincer skills.

And there is also always an atmosphere of fun. "I encourage a sense of play with babies and parents," said Weiss.

Weiss even writes her own original songs like "Makin Our Favorite Beat Drop" and "That's Why Daddy loves Disco" so parents don't get tired of singing the same lullabies and nursery rhymes.

So could there be a few future professional DJ's in the house?

"Maybe so," said DJ Jahan's Dad.

Weiss's classes run 8 weeks and are offered in Brooklyn and Manhattan's East Village and Upper East Side.
