HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A Houston police officer is making progress as he continues to recover from COVID-19.

After being released from the hospital to a long-term care facility just a few weeks ago, HPD Detective Ray Cervantes, 57, is off the ventilator and breathing on his own, according to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo.

"Happy to report @houstonpolice Detective Ray Cervantes is breathing on his own, talking, and on the road to a full recovery," Acevedo shared on Twitter.

Officer Cervantes' health progress comes after spending more than 40 days in the hospital being treated for the virus.

After being in intensive care and on a ventilator during his stay, Cervantes was transferred to a long-term facility where he continues his recovery.

Additionally, over 31 HPD officers have tested positive for coronavirus.
