Residents lose homes to fire
An apartment complex building was destroyed by a fire in Houston's south side

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Flames destroyed an apartment building Sunday afternoon at the Spanish Village complex on Houston's south side.

Firefighters were first called out to the 4000 block of Griggs Road around 12:30pm. Residents reported seeing smoke coming from a downstairs apartment.

The blaze quickly burned through eight apartments as firefighters battled it.

Dolores Wilson lives in the building. She said she went out to pay some bills, when friends called and told her the building was on fire. She lost almost everything except the flag from her husband's time in the armed service.

"I'm doing OK, just trusting in The Lord," said Wilson. "I'm doing all right."

At least one person was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital as a precaution. That person is expected to be OK.

Several firefighters were treated on scene for heat exhaustion. None were taken to the hospital.

Investigators are looking into whether faulty wiring is to blame for the fire.
