Alief Elsik HS to showcase diversity in Art Car Parade

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The students at Elsik High School will be showcasing the diversity that defines their campus in the 39th annual Art Car Parade.

"I want people to feel represented when they look at it," Art teacher Cavan Leerkamp said.

Leerkamp, who led the project this year, told ABC13 the students brainstormed on the theme and decided to highlight their different cultures.

"We went from representing 13 countries to about 36 now, which is a lot, and those are all countries students or staff come from," Leerkamp said.

Each country is represented either through flowers, patterns, or large papier-mache masks.

ABC13 visited the art class, and in the video above, you will see how the students collaborated to celebrate each other's differences.

The 2026 Houston Art Car Parade, presented by Team Gillman, returns Saturday, April 11.
