HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It was 56 years ago when Texas Southern University students marched and fought for justice and equality in Houston.

Serbino Sandifer-Walker, journalism professor at TSU, led her students Friday on the annual march to the site of the old Weingarten's Store. The site is now home to a post office.

On March 4, 1960, the students marched from the campus to the site of the old store, where they staged sit-ins to end segregation.

She says it's important for students to know the history of Houston and Texas Southern.

"They came here out of principle. It was out a commitment to standing up for justice," Sandifer-Walker added.
