The family was driving on the North Freeway near West Canino in northwest Houston last night. Police say the father pulled over and tried to wave off traffic away from his daughter, who was lying on the road. But another driver couldn't see her in the dark.

"She swerved to miss him and hit something. And she thought maybe it was something that fell out of his truck, like a piece of construction equipment, not knowing it was a person," said Lloyd Morrison II with the Houston Police Department. "She immediately pulls over anyway, trying to see what's going on. The guy's screaming, 'My baby girl,' and she says, 'Oh dear God'."

The girl is in extremely critical condition.

Police say her parents had just picked her up in Pasadena after she tried to run away from home.
