Rebuilding Houston: What you need to know before replacing your floors
HOUSTON -- After a major flood event like Harvey, homeowners might need new flooring.
Moisture and mildew isn't always apparent to the naked eye, but if you have wood floors that are buckling in some spots, water damage is likely underneath more than the obvious planks.
Daniel Quiroz, assistant manager of Home Depot, told Eyewitness News that homeowners have four flooring options:
Peel and stick laminate flooring
This is one of the cheapest and easiest options. Quiroz said you cut this material with a utility knife, peel off the backing and stick it into place.
Laminate flooring
Before you install a laminate flooring, you will want to install a moisture and sound barrier to protect your investment and eliminate noise from traffic as people walk over this type of flooring.
Vinyl flooring
If you have to replace parts of your wood floor, you can find a vinyl product that looks as close to the real thing.
Ceramic flooring
Quiroz said if you are going this route, you will need to use a product to level out any uneven surfaces in the foundation, otherwise you may put the ceramic tiles at risk for cracking.
