Rice University says it's expanding its free tuition program
The school said it's raising the cap for families earning up to $200,000 a year.
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Rice University announced this week that it's expanding its free tuition program, raising the cap for families earning up to $200,000 a year.
Currently, tuition is paid for families earning between $75,000 and $140,000, with fees, room, and board expenses covered for those earning $75,000 or less.
However, starting in fall 2027, students from families earning between $100,000 and $200,000 annually will receive free tuition.
Those earning less than $100,000 will also have their tuition, fees, room, and board covered, the school said.
"This is a defining moment for Rice University and for the future of higher education,” the university's president, Reginald DesRoches, said in a release. "Talent exists in every community and across every socioeconomic background."
Similar programs exist at public universities across Texas, including Texas A&M, the University of Texas, the University of Houston, and Texas Tech.
