HOUSTON (KTRK) -- US 290 is back open after a motorcycle rider fell off the elevated HOV onto the freeway below.

This happened about 4:10 Wednesday afternoon on the elevated HOV portion of US 290 near West Road.

Metro says the motorcycle rider hit the wall of the outbound US 290 HOV overpass to Metro Park and Ride, and fell onto the roadway below. The rider was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann hospital in an unknown condition.

Traffic is extremely heavy in the immediate area, but the freeway is now back open.
