Small plane lands on top of Fulshear-area home; pilot taken to the hospital, Texas DPS says

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A pilot was taken to the hospital after landing on top of a house in the Fulshear area on Monday morning, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The homeowner told ABC13 that they were in bed just before 6 a.m. when they heard a boom from the plane hitting their home.

Fulshear fire officials shared an image of the yellow aircraft on the home along Kitty Hawk Street, saying several agencies are responding to the scene. DPS reported that the plane was attempting to land at a nearby airstrip.

Fulshear Fire Department Battalion Chief Ford Stein said when first responders got to the home, the pilot was alert but stuck inside the cockpit. Before firefighters could help the pilot down, Stein said the home had to be secured.

"We needed to secure electricity to the house with the fuel leaking and the vapor we didn't want to cause a spark and cause a bigger problem than we already had," Stein said.

According to the FAA, it was a Piper J3C-65 that crashed into the house. The agency said only the pilot was on board and that they would investigate.

"You know you always hear airplane crash, and you don't always hear of someone walking away from it," Stein said.

The home that was hit is part of the Covey Trails neighborhood; a gated community built around a grass runway. Stein said the majority of homeowners also own and fly airplanes. It's unclear if the owner of the plane also lived in the neighborhood.

The pilot was reportedly taken to Memorial Hermann Katy for minor injuries. The homeowners said no one inside the home was injured.
