HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities say a Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's deputy has returned to work on Monday after he reportedly shot himself and his wife in the hand while he was off duty on Saturday.

According to Precinct 4 officials, the off-duty deputy was grabbing for a credit card in a bag while at a Harris County gas station on Saturday when his finger went into the trigger of a gun inside the bag, and the gun fired.

The bullet went through his wife's hand and grazed his own hand in the incident, officials said, due to the placement of their hands at the moment.

The wife was taken to the hospital after the shooting, authorities said, adding that she is still there.

Investigators said they interviewed the wife and said the incident appears to be accidental. Officials said investigators are analyzing the gun from the shooting.

Officials said the deputy has returned to work and has been given another gun by Pct. 4 to use. Authorities said they will be going over administrative measures with the deputy.
