Houston District C special election underway as seven candidates vie for vacant seat

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- After two weeks of early voting, Houston's District C voters cast their ballots Saturday in a special election, where seven candidates are competing to fill a vacant seat.

The seat became vacant after former District C Councilmember Abbie Kamin resigned to run for Harris County Attorney.

Spanning about 35 square miles, the district includes much of Houston's urban core, including Montrose and The Heights. District C is home to roughly 215,000 residents, making it Houston's largest district by population.

According to the Harris County Clerk's Office, more than 6,400 voters cast ballots during early voting.

The position plays a key role in Houstonians' daily lives, influencing essential services like road repairs and trash collection.

With seven candidates in the race, political analysts say the race is likely headed to a runoff.

The winner will serve the remainder of the term, which runs through January 2028.
