"They helped me get on my feet:" Vietnam veteran finds help and hope at WHAM

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- During ABC13's Share Your Holidays, every donation remains in our community and supports programs like the West Houston Assistance Ministries.

The nonprofit teams up with the Houston Food Bank to provide basic needs to families in need and homeless individuals in crisis.

Larry Gullette, a Vietnam veteran, told us he turned to WHAM when he fell on hard times.

"They helped me get on my feet, and I am an independent person today, and I give all my thanks to WHAM," Gullette shared.

For the 45th year, ABC13 is collecting donations for the Houston Food Bank at its most critical time of year, when too many people are experiencing hunger.

What started as an idea to put a food drive on TV for an hour has morphed into a Houston-area wide event going strong 45 years later as the ABC13 Share Your Holidays Food Drive.

Since 1980, the year the drive launched at ABC13, millions upon millions of cans of food have been collected through Share Your Holidays.
