Judge KP George back in commissioners court following conviction

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Fort Bend County Judge KP George returned to commissioners court on Thursday after a jury found him guilty of money laundering last month.

The last time George was seen, he was leaving jail after being released on bond. Hours earlier, he was being escorted out of the courtroom following his conviction.

Almost like business as usual; no chatter about George or what will happen to his position occurred during the meeting.

George is awaiting his sentencing hearing in June, meaning he may hold his elected position until then.

Prosecutors have told ABC13 they plan to ask a judge to suspend George from his duties as the county judge during sentencing.

But his removal could come sooner, as a judge could temporarily suspend George at a hearing scheduled for Friday morning.

The meeting is not related to his conviction; instead, it's over a formal complaint a woman filed, accusing George of having her improperly removed from a public meeting. George's attorney is trying to reschedule the hearing.

Meantime, the commissioners have now designated Commissioner Grady Prestage to sign off on all grant matters moving forward, after receiving a letter from Governor Greg Abbott's office a few weeks ago giving them 10 days to assign the duty to someone else following George's conviction.

According to the letter, 27 grants from the governor's public safety office were on hold because of George's conviction, since he was the official who signed off on them, and the Governor's office wasn't notified he was in litigation.
