
CLUTE, Texas (KTRK) -- An 11-year-old is dead after authorities said she was hit by a pickup truck while she was riding her bicycle on Thursday.
According to the Clute Police Department, the incident happened at 7:20 a.m. in the 400 block of Main near the Clute Intermediate School parking lot.
Police said the driver was exiting the school after dropping off their child, as the victim was on her bike riding on the sidewalk.
Authorities said the driver and other bystanders remained at the scene and tried to render aid.
The Brazosport Independent School District sent the following statement regarding the incident:
"BISD Mourns the Loss of a CIS Student
We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our Clute Intermediate students following an accident this morning. Our hearts are heavy as we grieve alongside the student's family, friends, classmates, teachers, and all who are impacted by this heartbreaking loss.
Counselors and additional staff will be available to support our students and staff members. Due to this tragic situation, Clute Intermediate parents who wish to pick up their children are welcome to do so. Please remember that students can only be released to adults who are on the contact list. Please bring proper identification with you.
During this incredibly difficult time, we ask that you keep the family and the entire Clute Intermediate campus in your thoughts and prayers. Our focus remains on supporting the family, students, and staff affected by this loss."
