GALVESTON COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities said two people have been arrested and charged after a crash involving a Galveston County Sheriff's Office deputy on Saturday.
According to GCSO, the crash happened on FM 2004 and Spruce Street in Hitchcock at about 1 a.m. on Saturday. Officials said the deputy was attempting to make a traffic stop on a black SUV traveling at a high rate of speed when the marked patrol unit was struck by a white Dodge pickup truck.
GCSO said the deputy was taken by EMS to UTMB Galveston, where he was treated and later released. A Sheriff's Office K9 was also inside the patrol unit during the crash and did not sustain any injuries, officials said.
The driver of the white Dodge truck, 24-year-old Johnathan Hernandez, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for minor injuries, authorities said. Hernandez was then taken to the Galveston County Jail and charged with driving while intoxicated, according to GCSO.
After the crash, the black SUV returned to the scene, where the driver, a 22-year-old Sherlyn Trejo, was detained after showing signs of intoxication, investigators said. Trejo was later charged with driving while intoxicated with an open container, according to authorities.
In a video from the scene, you can see airbags deployed in the deputy's vehicle and another vehicle damaged.
