ROSHARON, Texas (KTRK) -- For Iowa Colony High School sophomore Kalvin Williams, he's busy when he's on duty as an athletic trainer.
"When I'm at a track meet, I make sure our athletes are prepared mentally and physically," Williams said. "Right before they run, we make sure they're not sore or cramping. We make sure they get water so we can keep them prepared for next week and all the way to the state."
Williams is in his second year as a trainer, helping Iowa Colony athletes in whatever sport is in season.
"I've learned from great people like the trainer over there, Jazelle," Williams said. "I learned from our four head trainers, and without them I wouldn't know what I know."
He's now getting great experience, for a possible career later.
"I do it because this is my second option when I grow because my first option is to be an orthopedic surgeon," he said. "Every week, he gets hands-on training from a practicing orthopedic surgeon, who comes to school to help treat injured Pioneers."
Williams is laying a firm foundation for the future, and the sky is the limit for his future in medicine.
"I've learned so much just being a trainer for the past two years, and I'm ready to see what we're in for the next two years," he said.
