Police are searching for a suspect who killed a man in front of his wife in northeast Houston. Jeff Ehling reports

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The search is on for a killer in northeast Houston. Police say someone gunned down a 34-year-old man in his own driveway, and then drove off in to the night.

The shooting happened at a home the 4100 block of Englewood near Cavalcade, just after midnight in the driveway. Police say the man was shot and his wife saw it happen.

Neighbor Lonnie Hill had just come home from work when the shooting started. He says he heard three gunshots and then saw the victim, Sherron Wilkins, laying in the driveway. Sharee Wilkins saw her husband hit by gunfire.

Hill said, "She called 911 and was giving him, trying to give him CPR to bring him back."

Sharee Wilkins was unable to save her husband he died en route to Ben Taub Hospital. Sharee spent several hours talking to police and was too emotional speak with us on camera. Off-camera she said that Sherron Wilkins was, "Loving, caring and kind. He was a good man, he had a good heart."

Police say witnesses tell than Wilkins got into fight with someone he knows, that acquaintance then opened fire.

HPD's Kenneth Daignault said, "Ultimately some shots were fired and the victims was hit at least one time."

Those who live nearby say they are surprised by the violence.

Hill said, "This is a very quite neighborhood, for its to hear gunshots, it startled us."

Witnesses say they saw dark, two-tone SUV leaving right after the shooting, police are now looking for the driver of that vehicle.
