Car slams into side of school bus on Houston's southside

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A woman suspected of running a stop sign is now in the hospital after slamming into the side of a school bus in southeast Houston this morning.

There were nearly two dozen children on board but thankfully, none of them were seriously injured.

"When I was asleep, all I heard was the car hit the bus," said student Damarion Daniels. "I woke up and my head hit the window and it hurt."

"I heard the boom and when I got out here, my major concern was the children on the bus," said witness Eric Johnson.

It happened just before 7am. Police say the bus was heading north on Tierwester when the female driver of the white car heading west on Goodhope Road ran into it.

"She ran the stop sign," said school bus driver Claude Walker. "I was crossing the stop sign and she ran the stop sign."

The car was wedged underneath the bus, which then dragged the car out of the intersection.

The driver of the car and two bus monitors were transported to the hospital. Several children received cut lips and bruises and were treated at the scene.

The bus driver did what he could to help.

No children were transported to the hospital. Many are saying the bus driver's quick thinking and actions may have saved some lives.

"That was my priority, was to make sure they were OK," said Walker. "That's what they teach us. Make sure the kids are OK."

Those who were injured are expected to make full recoveries.
