HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The cool conditions continue for the first weekend of winter before warmer temperatures arrive for the holiday week. We're also monitoring two potential systems that could bring showers and storms in the middle of the week.
Temperature Saturday will fall into the mid-upper 30s across much of Southeast Texas. Areas closer to the coast will stay in the 40s, while towns north and east of Houston could experience a light frost overnight. Sunday will be just as sunny and mild as Saturday with afternoon highs climbing into the mid 60s.
It's looking more likely that it'll be a mild Christmas here in Southeast Texas. At this time, we anticipate morning lows in the 50s and daytime highs in the 70s. This warm up comes with an increase in rain chances too with several weather systems moving in and out of the region the week of Christmas.
Right now we're monitoring the potential for two weather systems to bring rain to the state, including us here in Houston. The first develops early in the week and could bring scattered showers and a storm or two Christmas Eve. Depending on the strength and timing of this first system, a few storms could be on the stronger side with the best chance of that happening north of the city of Houston, closer to College Station. This system will move out by Christmas Day, where cloudy and mild conditions continue. This is before the second weather system quickly develops by Thursday, where another batch of showers and storms could impact travel plans across Texas the day after Christmas.
We see no signs of freezing temperatures in southeast Texas over the next 10 days. Long-range projections indicate we'll have to wait until the first half of January for a decent chance of a freeze in Houston. On average, Houston's first freeze occurs during the second week of December.
