HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The northbound lanes of West Beltway 8 that were underwater for nearly two weeks after Hurricane Harvey have reopened, but the southbound lanes remain closed for repairs.

Officials said a sinkhole and other damage will keep motorists off the southbound lanes for the time being. Most notable among the damage is a giant sinkhole that has blocked traffic on the feeder road.

The prolonged delay will force commuters to find a way around the closed roads. That also presents more difficulty as water is still blocking side streets and typical thoroughfares.

Authorities do not expect the southbound lanes to open until next week.
