Vehicles sliding on icy Houston freeways

If you have to drive, remember these tips from the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management:

Always buckle your seatbelt.

Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.

Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.

Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.

Be especially careful on bridges and overpasses.

Know your vehicle and how it operates. Not all cars respond the same to slippery roads.

Here are a few ways to stay safe on the road during cold, wet or snow days.
