Even with recent layoffs, MD Anderson is Houston's second largest employer.
United Airlines, which has a major operations hub at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, is the city's third largest employer, with 15,000 employees.
Houston Methodist is the city's fourth largest employer.
Energy giant Exxon Mobil, surprisingly the only energy company in the top 5, is Houston's fifth largest employer.
Grocery chain Kroger is Houston's seventh largest employer.
San Antonio-based grocer H-E-B comes in at #22 on the list of Houston's biggest employers.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- When you think of jobs in the city of Houston, oil and gas might be the first things to come to mind.

You might, however, be surprised to learn that energy firms aren't the city's largest employers -- in fact, only one energy company holds a spot in the city's top five largest employers.
