Ugly Christmas sweaters got their start a few years back when teens and college students started wearing the worst of the worst to Christmas parties.

"I've had some grandmother types come down and say, 'Oh, that's not ugly. That's just a nice sweater,"' Stephen Peever told the Canadian Press. "Thank you for the trend. You're the one who started it."

Then on the second Friday of December 2011, a group of students at San Diego State University created the official website for "National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day," making it a new annual tradition.

The idea has turned into a booming business, with stores and online retailers creating and selling some of the ugliest sweaters you can find. There's even an official NFL collection this year. There are Cowboys sweaters still available, but the Texans ugly sweaters appear to be sold out.
