HOUSTON (KTRK) -- News of Houston ISD's Jack Yates High School being awarded back to back state basketball titles retroactively was bitter sweet Friday night.

Friends and family paid their respects to Artreal Jones, a guard on the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 teams that lost in the championship games to Dallas' Madison High School. Madison forfeited its titles earlier this week amid a recruiting controversy. Now Yates is listed as the champions, but Jones didn't live to see it.

"He's playing basketball with God," friend Curry Gaut told Eyewitness News.

Jones collapsed during a pickup basketball game August 7 and died. His mother tells us he had a heart condition diagnosed in 2011.

Friends attended a wake Friday night.

Jones, who planned to attend Texas Southern University this fall, will be laid to rest Saturday in Navasota.
