Two-alarm fire breaks out at apartment building in southwest Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in southwest Houston has forced 24 families to evacuate their apartments.

The fire at Sun Blossom Garden Apartments on Ranchester and Town Park is believed to have possibly started on a balcony from a cigarette, according to a Houston Fire Department official.

No one was hurt, but 12 units were damaged as a result of smoke and water. Two units caught fire and the fire got into the complex's attic.

The complex has 24 units, and everyone from those units has been safely evacuated as of this writing. Many are still waiting outside wrapped in bed sheets and robes.

Reporter Courtney Fischer shared this new cell phone video from a resident at Sunblossom Apartments with the flames coming from top floor:

A lot of them are telling Eyewitness News the same story -- that a neighbor went around pounding on doors, telling people to wake up and get out.

Resident Anna Rivera said, "We were sleeping and someone - all we hear was someone like, 'fire, fire, fire,' and we just got out and we came outside and we saw flames, smoke. ... It started with smoke on the top of the second building. But it was just smoke and after five minutes it started with fire on the roof."
