Homecoming mums are getting bigger in Texas
These mums are as big as Texas!

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- If you're looking for a simple homecoming mum, then you're out of luck. These days, there's no such thing.

While some of the traditional ones include the flower as a center piece, ribbons, a few charms and a teddy bear, other homecoming mums are becoming what some consider as over the top.

Elizabeth Cleaver, known as The Mum Queen in Spring, said she has made one for $1,200.

The homecoming mum. It's a Texas-sized tradition that is getting even bigger.

"Seems like the mum trend is changing to quality not quantity," Cleaver said.

She said all her work is hand-made, mostly blinged out and features braided ribbons, which adds up.

"There are different braid choices: Whip, curly, military, double military, love, the wave, box, ribbon candy, bubble, champion, spirit and Texas diamond," Cleaver said.

The extra jumbo size mums are so big, it can no longer be pinned to your outfit. Years and years ago, a student's outfit could take the weight of a simple mum. Not anymore. Instead, it has grown so much, it now goes around a student's neck.

ABC13 did a little bit of searching for some unique and mammoth-sized mums with all the bells and whistles and much more.

Twitter user @coachjnewt shared a photo from a high school in Montgomery, Texas. The bigger one in the photo is shaped as Texas, which has become a popular design and LED lights have been a common request as well and a pricier detail.

And here's one from Hal Bowman, showing another Texas-shaped homecoming mum that covers his entire body.

Tina Molhoek, a teacher in Keller, Texas, shared photos of students showing off their mums. People will create mums for students that reflect their personality, things they like and what they do at school. One girl included a megaphone on her mum because she's a cheerleader.

Here's one from Cypress Woods High School. It shows another big trend for homecoming mums - feather boas.

This one, created by Homecoming Mums by Kana, is different. Instead of a more traditional mum, it's a sash.

And finally, here's a tweet that shows the variety of styles. It perfectly captures this Texas-sized tradition.
