FARMERS BRANCH, Texas (KTRK) -- Police in north Texas say an officer's bulletproof vest saved his life after he was shot during a traffic stop.

According to Farmers Branch police, the shootout happened at around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday during a stop in the city located northwest of Dallas.

Investigators say an armed woman who was a passenger in the stopped car shot at the officer. The officer returned fire, wounding the woman.

Both the officer and the suspect were taken to a hospital. The suspect later died.
