6 foods that naturally help fight headaches

When a headache strikes, your normal routine may include getting in bed and popping a pill. But did you know that certain foods may ease, and even prevent, headaches? Add these soothing foods to your shopping list to help relieve that throbbing in your temples.

1. Ginger

Ginger root has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help fight headaches as well as nausea-inducing migraines. Add some ginger to your smoothies, shave it in salads, or brew some tea to help combat your headaches.

2. Watermelon

Dehydration is a major cause of headaches, so instead of popping a pill the next time your head hurts, consider reaching for water-rich foods, like watermelon. Other foods with high water content include berries, cucumber, melon, soups, oatmeal, tomatoes and lettuce.

3. Potatoes

The side you love with dinner could help soothe your aching head, especially if your headache is alcohol-related. Like melons, potatoes are chock-full of potassium, which can help treat headaches if you're dehydrated.

4. Fatty Fish

Foods rich in B vitamins like B6, B12, and folic acid may help reduce your amount of headaches, which is why salmon and tuna are great additions for beating pain.

5. Spicy Salsa

It may sound unusual, but spicy foods such as salsa and hot peppers may help you snap back from a headache faster. If a headache is linked to sinus congestion, spicy foods may help to decrease congestion and open the airways, helping to decrease pressure and the accompanying headache.

6. Water

We know water is not actually a food, but staying hydrated is the most important thing you can do to prevent and treat headaches.
