About 750,000 people will gather on Saturday, June 29 for an inclusive event acknowledging the contributions and concerns of LGBTQ+ people in Houston.
"This started as a riot," said Kevin Anderson, who serves as this year's male-identifying grand marshal. "But because of that riot, we're now in a position where we are able to be honored and to celebrate our lives as queer folks."

Anderson, who mobilizes support for LGBTQ+ communities of color through his nonprofit The T.R.U.T.H. Project, said gay rights trailblazers Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera paved the way for this moment of joy.
Simultaneously, this moment is also fraught with concern for the future.
During the 88th legislature, Texas saw a flood of bills targeting the LGBTQ+ community, including the passage of SB14, a bill that banned gender affirming care for transgender youth.
Harris Co. Commissioner Lesley Briones, who was chosen by voters ally grand marshal, said the political climate makes Pride all the more relevant this year.
"Here in Harris County we do not stand for hate, and we believe deeply in everyone's fundamental equality," Briones said. "As a mom of three little girls, I want to make sure that they know they can grow up to be their full authentic selves."

How to Celebrate Pride in Houston
In addition to the 46th annual parade and festival at the end of the month, Pride Houston has a busy month ahead with events to reflect and inspire the LGBTQ+ community.
"The meaning of pride is to be without apology, and I think we're doing a great job exuding that this year," director of community engagement Tiffany Scales said. "This celebration is meaningful because you can come out, regardless of how long you've been experiencing the community, and have the great impact of what celebration looks like."
