Man reported missing in 2015 is safe and with his mom by choice despite allegations against her: HPD

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston police say Rudy Farias, a man who was found last week outside a church after his mom reported him missing eight years ago, made no reports of sexual abuse. This contradicts details from activist Quanell X who says Farias told him his mother drugged and sexually abused him for years.

Meanwhile, others have come forward to say he never disappeared. Farias was reported missing on March 7, 2015, and police confirmed the then-17-year-old returned home the following day on March 8.

Quanell says he was in the room while Farias told investigators about the drugging and sexual abuse.

During Thursday press conference, Houston police said no statements of sexual abuse were made in this case. The now 25-year-old was reported safe and with his mother by choice.

When asked if Farias and his mother suffer from mental illness, officials were unable to confirm or deny.

Additionally, HPD said Farias had previous interactions with Houston police officers out on the street but fictitious names and date of births were given, misleading officers. As a result, Farias would remain classified as missing.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office has declined any charges for making fictitious reports and failure to ID.

Farias left an Humble hotel Wednesday with a towel over his head after speaking with detectives. His mother was there too but didn't answer any of our questions.

Farias was reported missing eight years ago. A week ago, he was found unresponsive on the steps of a church near Magnolia Park, and since then, the story has taken many turns.

Over the last few days, neighbors of Farias' mother told ABC13 that the 25-year-old is not missing and that they've seen him for years. Quanell says Farias told him that his mother said he would be in trouble with police if he tried to run.

"He initially ran away. He came back two days later, and she told him he needed to hide. Slice wounds from here to his wrists. All type of scars on this kid, and he said she often locked him in a room," Quanell said.

Following the news conference, ABC13 reached out to Quanell, who said he's adamant a detective was present.
