The DA's Office said in a statement that while it remains under federal control, it will review any additional evidence within its reach.
On Wednesday, the community gathered for a march in response to the shooting. Shortly before, the DA's office was out canvassing for information regarding the shooting, sources confirmed to ABC13.
This decision follows as a family reels from the death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a man who ICE claims was in the country illegally, and was shot and killed on his way to work. The agency claimed that the shooting stemmed from a vehicle stop as part of a targeted enforcement operation. ICE said the agent fired in self-defense after the agency claimed that Salgado Araujo tried to run him over.

Salgado's family met with District Attorney Sean Teare on the matter. A photo was shared on social media by LULAC President Domingo Garcia, a short time after a press conference where community and city leaders condemned the agency for the shooting and expressed that there needs to be a thorough, independent investigation into the shooting.
Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare was extensively interviewed following the shooting about the role the county would play. Teare said that the county has been in contact with the Minneapolis District Attorney's Office to learn how they navigated the shooting deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by ICE agents in January of 2026.
Teare also said that since the county will be looking into the shooting, they would review all evidence that comes their way. He says that there are concerns over certain aspects of the case that have not been released, such as the names of the agents involved and the possibility of missing video footage. Teare says if it exists, then the county will search for it. The DA mentioned that if it were determined that Lorenzo was in the country illegally, civil removal proceedings could be initiated.
Mayor John Whitmire also said that the City of Houston is monitoring the situation but will not be involved directly. He also stated that the Houston Police Department is not involved in the matter. Whitmire called it a "tragic, complex issue that's brought to us by our federal officials."
The shooting has garnered national attention from others, as Mexico said it plans to pursue legal action against the United States, saying that it will not stand for the "mistreatment of our fellow Mexicans in the United States."
According to the family, Lorenzo, who had been in the States for 36 years, was close to receiving his work permit.
DA Sean Teare said Salgado's name did not appear in any database, showing he hasn't been in any trouble or received as much as a traffic ticket during his time in the U.S.
