Klein ISD increases police presence, safety audit in schools after multiple gun-related incidents

Monday, March 23, 2026
KLEIN, Texas (KTRK) -- Klein ISD started its new security measures on Monday, including increased police presence, after multiple gun-related incidents on campuses, according to district officials.

The three separate incidents include a gun being fired inside Klein Collins High School, a man with a gun walking into Zwink Elementary, and a student showing an unloaded gun to other students at Klein High School, according to the school district.

In all of these incidents, no one was hurt, officials said.

According to the district, Klein ISD began its increase in security measures on Monday. This includes more police presence at each school, an increase in random metal detector screenings, and more random searches with K-9 police units, the district said.

In an email sent to Klein ISD parents, the district said it will also begin a comprehensive safety audit, stating in part:

"The District has long conducted regular safety audits across all campuses, both internally and in partnership with external agencies. These established safety audits remain a critical part of our safety system.

As part of our deep commitment to continuous improvement, especially in school safety, we are currently undertaking a comprehensive safety vulnerability audit. This review, which began earlier this month, is an added layer designed to further strengthen our efforts by providing an additional, independent perspective. At the District's request, by the end of April 2026, 100% of our campuses will have completed this thorough evaluation by the Texas Education Agency Office of Safety and School Security, further strengthening a safe and secure learning environment for all."

Following the incidents, a safety coalition was formed by parents, advocating for more safety measures in schools. Specifically, the group is asking for a third-party safety audit of all the schools, measurable safety standards for each school, and daily metal detector screening at secondary campuses.

Klein ISD said it welcomes parent feedback and ideas, and district officials are also asking parents to take time to talk to their kids about the seriousness of bringing a weapon to school. In the same email to parents, the district stated in part:

"We ask for your continued partnership in reinforcing these expectations with your children:
  • Any student who brings a weapon to school will be arrested, expelled, and face felony charges.
  • Ensure all firearms in your home are stored safely and securely, completely inaccessible to minors.
  • Stay actively involved in your child's life-know their friends, activities, and online behavior. Research consistently shows that strong parent engagement is one of the most effective deterrents to risky or harmful behavior.
  • Remind your child: if something doesn't feel right, report it immediately to a trusted adult."
