Law enforcement sources confirmed on Wednesday that the proceedings had begun in the case, adding that witnesses were being brought in to be interviewed by the grand jury.
Salgado Araujo was fatally shot during an enforcement operation on July 7 by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who opened fire on the white van he was driving.
Authorities have said he was not the target of the operation that was being carried out. Three other people in the white van were detained, some of whom have been released.

Last month, prosecutors in the case said they intended to bring several witnesses before a grand jury.
