Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said shots were exchanged between law enforcement and the suspect, who died at the scene.
"It turned out to be the end of the road right here," Gonzalez said.
During a Wednesday news conference, officials said they received information that the suspect had a connection to someone in the area of Riverside Park and might be in the area.
At about 1 p.m., Humphrey arrived at the park in a white Jeep, got out of the vehicle, and sat on the slide, according to authorities.
When officers, who had been conducting surveillance for hours, made a plan to go after him, the suspect took off running and started firing his gun.
Two Department of Public Safety troopers and three Harris County deputies - all were conducting surveillance on him - returned fire.
Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite called it a very dangerous "moving gun battle."

Humphrey collapsed and died in the yard of an unoccupied home across the street. No officers or citizens were injured in the shooting.
Humphrey was accused of shooting and killing 26-year-old Shantavia Reddick, identified as a beloved third-grade teacher at Smith Elementary, and her dog during a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend.
Reddick had reportedly gone to help her friend leave an abusive relationship but was shot to death in the Sept. 9 incident on E. Mossy Oaks Road. She was Springs ISD's Rookie Teacher of the Year for 2021-2022.
Deputies later released Humphrey's photo in hopes of finding him. They believed he was in the Dallas area as late as Tuesday and returned to Houston overnight.
