HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It was a really great day over at UH today. Maycie Gonzalez, who is just 12 years old, signed a letter of intent to run track at UH.

"It means a lot to me to be able to do something that I wouldn't have been able to do," she said. "It just means a lot to me that all the people believe in me. (It) helps build confidence in myself and what I think I can do."

At a very young age, Maycie was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma, a cancer of the retinas, in the eye. And at just two and a half years old, doctors removed her left eye.

But so far, Maycie has been cancer free for 10 years, but has to deal with the disease every day.

Today she pledges that her favorite program is UH and will continue to update her on her studies, thanks to team impact that help young people with health issues using sports as a background to team work.
