DALLAS, TX -- Dallas police have shot and killed a 38-year-old man who was armed with a screwdriver.

Deputy Police Chief Gil Garza says Jason Harrison was killed Saturday during a confrontation with police responding to a report that he needed to be hospitalized to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

The Dallas Morning News reports Sunday that Harrison came out of his home carrying a screwdriver and became aggressive when officers told him to drop the tool. Both officers drew their guns and shot Harrison.

Garza says it was a "very, very, very brief altercation" and the "officers were protecting themselves."

The officers' names have not been released.

Garza says the officers have been placed on administrative leave as is routine in such shootings. Police are reviewing video footage of the incident.
