CROSBY, TX (KTRK) -- The Crosby Independent School District as well as countless other parents are calling a local bus driver a hero.

According to Crosby ISD, veteran bus driver David Cooke of Bus 74 had just arrived at one of his stops yesterday to let children off. He opened the doors, but said he sensed something wasn't right.

Authorities say an erratic woman suddenly rushed the school bus, ran up the steps and threatened to bite Mr Cooke.

But this bus driver knew he had to protect his kids. He struggled with the woman and eventually got her off the bus. He then closed the doors and drove down the street.

Police arrested the woman a short time later. Cooke then returned to his route to drop off the children.

"He brings back my child in one piece, a happy piece. He did exactly what every parent would want their school bus driver to do to keep their kids safe. So I'm very thankful for Mr. Cooke," said Heather, the mother of a 5-year-old who rides with Cooke.

Heather and other parents say they'll be dropping their kids off at the bus stop today with a little more ease, knowing that Mr. Cooke will be behind the wheel.
