Man shot by police and questions remain unanswered
The family of the man shot say they don't know his condition or whether he posed a threat to police

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Cell phone video captured the chaotic moments after officers shot a man Friday night. In the video provided to Eyewitness News by a viewer, you can see officers with their guns drawn pointing at the man as he stumbles in front of Sunny's Food Store.

In the video not seen, officers put handcuffs on the man after he falls to the ground. Blood is visible on his torso. Eyewitness News edited the video down due to the graphic nature.

The bloody confrontation played out Friday night on a southwest Houston street between two police officers and man who Houston police say just wouldn't listen. Two officers shot the man, but people who witnessed the incident say HPD's use of force was excessive.

Family members identified the man shot by HPD as 38-year old Mike Walker. They say the father of two is stable. They say he has three wounds -- two to his legs and one in his stomach, which hit near his liver. He's currently being treated at Ben Taub Hospital.

It all started around 9:30pm with a traffic stop on Buffalo Speedway near West Fuqua.

Officers pulled over a car for erratic driving and told the driver to get out. HPD says the passenger of the vehicle -- who witnesses call "Mike" also tried to get out -- even after officers told him to stay inside.

While Walker was inside the car, investigators say he reached under his seat, and that's when one officer shot him.

Walker got out of the car after being shot and that's when a second officer shot him.

Houston Police Department spokesperson Victor Senties said, "The second officer seeing the suspect try to reach into his waistband and into his sweater as if he was trying to locate something. He also feared for his safety and once he was out of the area, where there were people behind him the officer discharged his weapon as well."

Witness LaQuisha Spencer said, "I'm telling Mike, 'Lay down, lay down because they're going to shoot you. They're going to kill you. Lay down,' and I guess he was in shock. I mean, nobody deserves to get shot -- especially if they are unarmed."

HPD wouldn't say if they recovered a weapon at the scene.
