Robbery, murder suspect appears in court
Sergio Gil, 22, is accused of robbing a north Houston business and also charged with murdering a store clerk at another location

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A robbery and murder suspect who was caught after one of his alleged victims recognized him made his first appearance in court.

Police say 22-year-old Sergio Gill robbed a north Houston business and threatened employees.

Prosecutors tell us the defendant is linked to at least three robberies in Harris County and one in Houston. He stood before a judge today, more talkative than many defendants in the same position. He was asking questions at a time when most defendants choose to remain quiet.

He is charged with capital murder, aggravated robbery, and according to the prosecutor, confessed to the shooting. They say they have video from various smoke shops which show Gil shooting at people and robbing the shops, including one in which he killed store clerk, Zaiuddien Khan.

Gil was arrested, investigators say, when one of the store owners he robbed recognized him at a sporting goods store, as he tried to buy ammunition.

This is what the prosecutor had to say about Gil's demeanor in court.

"It was surprising, he asked if he could sign for time today, and then admitted that he understood what the range of punishment was for capital murder, it's unusual, most people tend not to say anything at the bench," said prosecutor Keri Fuller.

Prosecutors say that victims identified Gil from the distinct tattoos on his forearms.
